Effects and plugins

Resolve FX, the neural engine and plugins in the online studio

Most finishing work never needs an outside plugin: the built in effect set and the neural engine tools cover keying, cleanup, retiming, reframing and restoration. This page explains what is available in the browser studio and what still belongs on a desktop workstation.

Effect palette with Resolve FX and neural engine tools in the browser studio
Built in

Resolve FX, category by category

The effect palette is organised the way a finishing suite is: optical effects, restoration, stylisation and the everyday fixes that keep a shot on the timeline instead of in a compositor.

  • Blur, glow, light rays and lens effects for optical work
  • Film grain, halation and grain management for texture matching
  • Dust bust, dead pixel and noise reduction for restoration
  • Warp, mirror and stylise effects for graphics and transitions
  • Colour and warp effects that read the node tree around them
Neural engine

Machine learning tools that remove a day of manual rotoscoping

The neural engine handles the jobs that used to be measured in hours: isolating a person, removing an object, reframing a shot for a vertical version or improving a soft source.

  • Magic mask for people and objects, refinable frame by frame
  • Object removal with tracked patching
  • Depth map for defocus and atmospheric effects
  • Super scale for upscaling archive and phone footage
  • Smart reframe for automatic vertical and square versions
Plugins

Where third party plugins fit

Vendor installers, licence dongles and machine bound activation are exactly what a browser studio is designed to avoid, so third party plugin formats stay on the desktop side of the workflow.

  • The browser studio ships the built in Resolve FX and neural engine tools
  • Open FX style plugin installers belong to the desktop studio
  • Projects keep effect names so a hand off is predictable
  • When a shot needs a vendor plugin, hand off that shot only and bring the result back
Compatibility

When an effect is missing or looks different

Effects versioned in different builds can render differently. If a setting looks wrong after a hand off, check the basics before rebuilding the graph.

  • Confirm the effect name matches between the browser and desktop studio
  • Check the timeline resolution and colour space before comparing renders
  • Use the node graph comments to note the version an effect was built with
  • Ask the studio team to add a tool you rely on - the palette grows with requests
Help

Frequently asked questions

Effects and plugins questions that come up before a first render.

Are the Resolve FX in the browser the same as the desktop ones?

The names and parameters follow the same structure so a graph is portable, and the browser studio renders its own build of each effect. Very version specific behaviour can differ between builds.

Can I install Open FX plugins in the browser?

No. Vendor plugin installers are desktop software with local activation. Use the built in effects in the browser and move to the desktop studio for a shot that needs a specific plugin.

What does the neural engine cost me?

Neural engine tools run on the studio servers, so a heavy pass such as object removal or a batch reframe draws on the credits included with your plan.

Which neural engine tools are available in the browser?

Magic mask, object removal, depth map, super scale and smart reframe are the tools most finishing work reaches for first, and more are added as they are stabilised on the render side.

Is this the official Blackmagic Design product?

No. This is an independent third party browser studio. Effect names and product names belong to their respective owners and are used here to describe the workflow.

Ready when you are

Reach for a tool, not a different application
