DaVinci Resolve online system requirements: what your browser needs

There is no hardware compatibility list to work through, because the studio runs in the browser. What matters is a current browser, hardware acceleration, enough memory for the timeline you open and a connection that can stream your media.

  • Chrome or Edge, current version
  • Hardware acceleration enabled
  • 15 Mbps for 1080p playback, 50 Mbps for 4K

Browser and OS

Browser and operating system

The studio is built for current Chromium browsers. Keep the browser updated, allow hardware acceleration and close heavy extension tabs before a long render session.

  • Chrome or Edge, current stable release and the one before it
  • Windows 10 or later, macOS 12 or later, mainstream Linux desktops
  • Chromebooks with a current browser work for editing and review
  • Hardware acceleration must be enabled for the viewer and scopes
Network

Connection, proxy and playback

Media streams to the browser, so the connection sets the ceiling on how many tracks play cleanly. Proxies lower that ceiling dramatically for high resolution jobs.

  • 15 Mbps for smooth 1080p multi track playback
  • 50 Mbps for 4K timelines with several video tracks
  • Generate proxies for 6K and 8K camera media on slower links
  • Renders continue on the studio even if the browser tab closes
Graphics

Graphics, memory and the viewer

The viewer uses the GPU through the browser. Any modern integrated or discrete GPU handles grading and editing; the timeline complexity, not the page, is what asks for memory.

  • WebGL 2 capable graphics with up to date drivers
  • 8 GB of system memory for 1080p and 4K editing
  • 16 GB recommended for long 8K timelines and Fusion work
  • 1920x1080 display minimum, 2560x1440 or a second monitor recommended
Media and projects

Media, storage and project data

Camera media lives where you keep it and streams into the project; the project itself, its versions and its renders live in the studio, so a lost laptop does not lose the edit.

  • No local render cache or scratch disk to configure
  • Projects, versions and archives stored with the account
  • Delivery files downloaded from the render queue to any machine
  • Nothing to update, patch or license on the client

Frequently asked questions

System requirements questions that come up before a first render.

Which browsers are supported?

Current Chrome and Edge releases, plus the version before them. Safari and Firefox are not supported for editing yet, and older Chromium builds may miss features the viewer needs.

Does it work on a Chromebook?

Yes for editing, colour and review work. Keep the number of simultaneous video tracks sensible and use proxies for high resolution media.

How much bandwidth do I really need?

Around 15 Mbps is comfortable for 1080p work and 50 Mbps for 4K. Slower connections still work for trimming and grading if you generate proxies first.

Do I need a discrete GPU?

No. Integrated graphics with hardware acceleration enabled run the viewer, scopes and mixer. A discrete GPU helps mainly with the largest 8K timelines in the browser.

Can I work from a phone hotspot?

For short sessions, yes. Use proxies, keep the timeline simple and download deliverables once you are back on a stable connection.

Where this fits in the workflow

The studio is one project with several pages. These are the pages that usually come before and after this one.

Ready when you are

Check your setup in one minute

Open the studio and load a clip. If the viewer plays and the scopes move, the machine is already good enough to edit on.
