Keyboard shortcuts that carry a whole edit in the browser

Speed in editing is rarely about typing fast; it is about not reaching for the mouse. A dozen keys cover most of a cutting session, and the browser studio keeps the same key family as the desktop app, so habits transfer in both directions.

The dozen

The first dozen keys: play, mark, cut, trim

Start with transport and edit keys: play and stop, set in and out points, and the trim keys that remove a clip cleanly. These carry a first full cut before you learn anything else.

  • Space: play and stop
  • J, K, L: shuttle, pause and fast forward review
  • I and O: set in and out points
  • Arrow keys: step a frame at a time
Marks

Markers keep notes off the timeline and in the frame

Markers drop notes onto the frame instead of into memory. Use them for client feedback, graphics spots and music cues; the markers list jumps between every note on the project.

  • M: drop a marker at the playhead
  • Rename and recolour markers to sort notes by type
  • Jump between markers from the panel
  • Flags tag clips in a bin rather than frames on a timeline
Remap

Remapping keys without breaking muscle memory

If you arrive from another editor, remap the handful of keys that disagree rather than relearning everything. The studio keeps the desktop key map, so habits built in either place carry over.

  • Change keys without disturbing the defaults
  • Move habits over from other editors key by key
  • Learn one new key a week instead of ten at once
  • Print this page: a cheat sheet still beats memory

Frequently asked questions

Shortcuts questions that come up before a first render.

Are the browser shortcuts the same as the desktop app?

They follow the same family of defaults, so trim, marker and navigation habits transfer. Where a key differs from an old habit, it can be remapped.

Which keys give the fastest first win?

Space to play, I and O to mark, and the ripple delete that removes a clip without leaving a gap. With those keys a rough cut is keyboard only.

Do shortcuts work while typing a marker name?

Text fields rightly take priority while you type. Click back to the timeline and the editing keys resume where they were.

Is there a printable list of all keys?

This page is written as the list worth learning first rather than an exhaustive key map; print it and add your own remaps to the margin.

Ready when you are
